Typical farmers in Peru have parcels that are a couple hectares(there are no large estates as land was taken from the wealthy land owners and redistributed to the poor during the 60's and 70's). The land is farmed with the help of their families and income is below minimum wage. By selling their coffee as Fair Trade/Organic a minimum price is guaranteed when the 'C market' is below a certain point.
